With summer right around the corner, many people are itching to get out and have fun. Despite the fact that the pandemic is possibly approaching an end, it is important to continue practicing social distancing while there is still risk of another wave. Here are some fun and safe summer activities we can do in the meantime.
Activity #1: Make your own ice cream
There’s nothing like a cold scoop of ice cream on a hot summer day. Unfortunately, going out for ice cream isn’t ideal while taking social distancing precautions. Why not bring the ice cream shop to your home instead? There are plenty of recipes on the internet to create homemade ice cream with a bag if you don’t have an ice cream maker (link here). This can be a fun summer themed activity for people of all ages.
Activity #2: Go to an outdoor farmers market
If you already have to go out to buy groceries, think about going to an outdoor farmers market. Not only will this cut down on COVID-19 transmission risk by being outdoors, but it can be a fun activity for getting in the mood for summer. For extra fun, try picking up recipe ingredients from this list of 15 fresh farmers market recipes and cook some new meals!
Activity #3: Have a water balloon fight
While heading off to the beach or local pool might seem like a good way to cool off in the summer heat, it might not be ideal if overcrowding makes social distancing difficult. Instead, consider cooling off with a water balloon fight at home. If you have kids, this can be an exciting activity for them on a weekend and is cheap and easy to set up. All you need are water balloons and a hose!
Activity #4: Go to a drive-in movie
A lot of us probably miss spending a summer evening going to the movies. This is why it might be the perfect time to bring back a more old school movie-going trend: drive-in movie theaters. While less common than typical movie theaters, there are still many drive-ins up and running today! But if you don’t live near a drive-in theater, consider setting up your own in a drive way or cul-de-sac with a projector. This is a great way to see a movie that is also naturally outdoors and socially distanced!
Activity #5: Camp or picnic in the backyard
While camping and picnicking are great summer activities, it can be difficult to find space to maintain social distancing in crowded campgrounds and parks. Camping or picnicking in the backyard can be a great summer-themed family activity. Add in a grill and some music and you can have a fun and safe cookout as well!
